Ferrari V8 test has Schu in a spin

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Seven-times world champion Michael Schumacher cut short his winter holiday to test in Spain on Thursday and immediately spun off the damp Jerez circuit.

The German, back at work for the first time since Ferrari's sad F1 season ended in October, was soon up to speed however and said he was positively surprised by the new V8 engine.

"I feel a much lower level of power, but this sensation is nice," he told reporters at the circuit. "It is interesting and the sound is totally different."

His spokeswoman quoted him as saying: "On the first lap I was shocked but then I noticed that I had not used the full potential of the engine.

"I do feel this limitation of power, but honestly I had expected a lot worse."

Formula One's engine rules are changing next year with a switch from three litre V10 to 2.4 litre V8 units.

Schumacher said last weekend that he wanted to test because he felt he did not deserve a holiday after his worst year since he joined Ferrari in 1996.

The German won only once in 2005, the six-car U.S. Grand Prix fiasco at Indianapolis, and was dethroned after a five-year reign by Renault's Spaniard Fernando Alonso.

Thursday's outing was the first time since 1998 that Schumacher has tested between the end of the season in October and the New Year.

"I feel very fresh and very motivated, very hungry," he said at the weekend. "I feel it would be too late to wait until some time in January until I will be in the car."
