Miller threatens to quit the tour
KRANJSKA GORA, Slovenia -- Overall World Cup champion Bode Miller has threatened to quit the tour after being fined by the International Ski Federation (FIS) in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia on Thursday. American Miller was fined 1,000 Swiss francs ($761) for failing to take a regulation boot test after finishing the first leg of a World Cup slalom. The event was won by Italian Giorgio Rocca in one minute 35.98 seconds. "If they don't lift the fine I will quit the tour," Miller told Reuters. "It makes no sense. I want nothing to do with these people and the way they run the tour," the 28-year-old said. Miller did not qualify for the second leg of the slalom after making an error on his first run and finishing 3.44 seconds behind halfway leader Benjamin Raich of Austria. Miller complained of pain in his left knee and quickly left the finish area. He injured the knee in a crash during the combined downhill at the 2001 World Championships. U.S. Ski Team media manager Mark Habermann said Miller planned to have an RMI scan in Innsbruck later on Thursday. Italian Rocca maintained his perfect record in World Cup slaloms this season with his third victory. Rocca, winner in Beaver Creek and Madonna di Campiglio, won in one minute 35.98 seconds when first leg leader Raich skied out on his second run. "It's a dream to win three races in a row. It's much more than I expected," Rocca told reporters. "I felt so confident and sure just doing my race. I had no problems but conditions were tough on the second leg," added the 30-year-old, who won in Kranjska Gora last season. Canada's Thomas Grandi went one better than his third place in Wednesday's giant slalom with a time of 1:36.62. American Ted Ligety continued his fine season with third place in 1:36.65. Raich's mistake cost him the chance of going top of the overall standings after Miller's failure to qualify for the second run. Norwegian Aksel Lind Svindal took over top position following his 18th place finish in the race.
