TOKYO, Japan -- Former world number one Martina Hingis will appear among a strong field at the Pan Pacific Open, beginning at the end of January.

Hingis, who is set to make her return to the WTA Tour in Australia next month, has entered the $1.3 million Tokyo event with Maria Sharapova, Lindsay Davenport and Serena Williams.

Both Hingis and world number one Davenport have won the Pan Pacific title four times.

Hingis has accepted wildcards to play in tournaments on the Gold Coast and in Sydney before competing at the Australian Open.

The 25-year-old Swiss retired three years ago after being plagued with foot, heel and ankle injuries. She won the last of her five grand slam singles titles at the 1999 Australian Open.

Former French Open champion Anastasia Myskina and fellow Russian Elena Dementieva are also scheduled to play at the tournament, which runs from January 31 to February 5.
