Costacurta signs new AC Milan deal

Veteran defender Costacurta is staying at AC Milan for another year

MILAN, Italy -- AC Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta has signed a contract extension with the Italian champions that will take him past his 40th birthday.

Costacurta's current deal expires at the end of this season but Milan said the former Italy international, who will turn 39 in April, had signed to stay for an additional 12 months.

Costacurta made his debut for Milan in October 1987 and has been with the club ever since, winning four European Cups and seven Italian league titles.

The central defender, who can also play at full-back, made 22 appearances during Milan's title winning campaign last season.

Although the oldest player on Milan's books, Costacurta is not the longest serving. That honour belongs to captain Paolo Maldini who on Thursday will celebrate the 20th anniversary of his Serie A debut.

Roma appeal

Roma are to appeal against a one-match stadium ban handed to them after fans disrupted last week's Italian Cup third round, second leg at Siena.

The Italian football league's disciplinary council have told the troubled Serie A club they must play the home leg of their quarterfinal tie against Fiorentina behind closed doors at a neutral ground.

Antonio Conte, a lawyer representing Roma, said the club will contest the punishment and insisted they will take their claim to court if their first attempt to get the suspension lifted fails.

Roma supporters threw flares onto the pitch at Siena despite the pleas of their captain Francesco Totti, making visibility so poor that the game had to be suspended for over an hour.

Roma won the match 5-1 to secure a 6-3 aggregate win.

It is the third time in 12 months that Roma have been punished due to the unruly behaviour of their supporters.

They were forced to play two league games in Sicily last season after their fans caused the abandonment of the Rome derby.

And this season they were handed a two-match stadium ban after Swedish referee Anders Frisk was wounded by a missile thrown from the stands during a Champions League tie at home to Dynamo Kiev in September.

The cup match against Fiorentina is scheduled for January 26, while the away leg takes place in Florence on March 2.
