ALMERIA, Spain (Reuters) -- Spain eased their way to an unspectacular but efficient 5-0 victory at home to part-timers San Marino in a Group Seven World Cup qualifier on Wednesday.
The modest team from the tiny republic in northern Italy held out for just a quarter of an hour before midfielder Joaquin drilled in from the edge of the area to put the home side into the lead.
Striker Fernando Torres made it 2-0 shortly after the half hour following an excellent through-ball from debutant Ivan de la Pena and skipper Raul added a third before the break.
Despite monopolising possession, Spain never took full advantage of their domination and only managed to add two more in the second half, Guti heading in unopposed at the far post and Asier del Horno clipping in from 10 metres 11 minutes from time.
The victory lifted Spain into second place in the group with eight points from four games, two behind leaders Serbia & Montenegro and ahead of Lithuania on goal difference.
