Anderlecht title hopes given boost
BRUSSELS, Belgium -- Anderlecht's Belgian title ambitions have been boosted after league bosses awarded them three points from a match in November which ended on a bizarre note.
Anderlecht beat La Louviere 2-1 on the 12th matchday of the season.
However, the victory was put on hold after it was discovered that the ball had burst when Walter Baseggio scored Anderlecht's equaliser in the 64th minute.
Belgian federation bosses said at the time: "The ball having burst before crossing the goalline means the goal cannot be regarded as valid according to the rules. The match has to be replayed."
In the end the match was not replayed - and in December the referees' association decided there had been no mistake on the part of the match referee for allowing the initial result to stand.
The decision means Anderlecht are now six points behind leaders Bruges with eight matches still remaining.
