LYON, France (Reuters) -- Philip Cocu equalized 11 minutes from time to earn PSV Eindhoven a 1-1 draw at Olympique Lyon in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal on Tuesday.
Lyon went ahead in the 12th minute when Florent Malouda's low right-footed shot surprised keeper Gomes at the near post.
Midfielder Cocu shocked Lyon with a solo run and speculative shot from the edge of the box that went inside goalkeeper Gregory Coupet's left-hand post.
"We said before the game the most important thing was, we had to score. Fortunately it happened," Cocu said.
Lyon dominated most of the match, but the French league leaders missed several chances after Malouda's early goal.
"We played with a lot of rhythm in the first half, but they broke our rhythm after the break," Malouda said. "We have to stop them being comfortable playing at their own pace."
Lyon has never reached the semifinals of the Champions League and is now at a disadvantage ahead of the return leg in Eindhoven next Wednesday.
"It's not a good result," Lyon coach Paul Le Guen told French television. "We played well but missed chances to get a second goal.
"It's regrettable. We became tired and, physically, they are a very hard side to play against."
However, Lyon did not have to wait long to take the lead. Winger Sidney Govou tricked his way into the penalty area and crossed for striker Sylvain Wiltord.
Wiltord could not control the ball as it moved across the area toward Malouda, who swiveled and thumped it past Gomes and into the bottom left corner.
Lyon exerted continuous pressure after scoring. Mali midfielder Mahamdou Diarra, formerly of Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem, sent a blistering shot just past the left post and Michael Essien's shot from 20 meters bounced off the right post.
In the 34th, Govou's cross was fumbled by the nervy Gomes and Wiltord picked up the loose ball. He floated in a perfect cross for Essien, but the Ghana midfielder headed straight at Gomes.
Shortly before the break, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink had PSV's first chance, looping the ball over the crossbar after a slip from Brazil defender Cris.
PSV started the second half enjoying long spells of possession as Lyon sat back and waited for a chance to counterattack.
It came in the 62nd when Essien and Wiltord combined on the left to create a brilliant chance for Govou.
All alone and about 10 meters from goal, Govou saw his sidefoot shot expertly saved by Gomes, diving low to his left.
Lyon paid a heavy price with Cocu's late strike, but PSV coach Guus Hiddink said there was still work to do.
"Lyon are very strong away from home, whether it's in the French League or the Champions League, and we have not ensured qualification though this draw is a good first result," he said.
