Two-goal Lampard lifts Chelsea bid

Cole sparks a memorable night for Chelsea with a fourth minute goal

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Frank Lampard struck twice in the second half as Chelsea beat Bayern Munich 4-2 in Wednesday's Champions League quarterfinal first leg without banned coach Jose Mourinho in their dugout.

England midfielder Lampard scored two superbly-taken goals in between strikes by Joe Cole and Didier Drogba to give Chelsea a two-goal lead to take to Munich for Tuesday's second leg.

Bayern's second goal was a controversial penalty in the third minute of stoppage time and converted by Michael Ballack, who had fallen in the area after very little contact.

"I'm disappointed because of that last minute goal," said Lampard.

"We switched off a little and they scored. I don't know if Ballack was fouled but he was looking for it.

"Two goals is a good lead although three would have been better. We are in a good position for the second leg and we feel we can score anywhere in the Champions League."

Bayern's England midfielder Owen Hargreaves said he was confident his side could overturn the deficit in Bavaria next week.

"It was never a 4-1 game so it was good to come back," said Hargreaves. "It was quite even in the first half and when we got it back to 1-1, we had it under control.

"Their second goal came out of nowhere. They kept playing long balls and putting us under pressure."

Mourinho, suspended by UEFA after incidents in the last round against Barcelona, decided not to sit in the stands and watched the match on television -- reportedly from the Health Centre at Stamford Bridge.

He saw Chelsea make the perfect start after four minutes when Cole's shot from 25 meters struck Bayern defender Lucio and completely wrong-footed keeper Oliver Kahn to put them in front.

Bayern equalized seven minutes after the break when halftime substitute Bastian Schweinsteiger fired a right-foot shot past goalkeeper Petr Cech from six metres.

Chelsea's response was swift, though, as Lampard's sweetly struck shot from just outside the area flew past Kahn on the hour after he was set up by a deft Drogba header.

Lampard then scored the goal of the night when he controlled a cross from Claude Makelele on his chest, swivelled and fired home once again with his left foot from 10 metres.

Drogba was rewarded for his set-up play as he rifled the ball into the net from close range to put Chelsea in complete command until Ballack's late penalty given by Dutch referee Rene Temmink handed the Germans' hope.
