BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Diego Maradona has been offered the job of youth team coach at Boca Juniors, the club he supports and where he had two stints as a player.

"We have decided to offer Maradona the post of sporting director of amateur football," said president Maurico Macri.

"Now it depends on him," Macri added. "This has always been his dream and we are happy to make it come true."

The post would effectively involve coaching the youth divisions at one of the world's most fanatically supported clubs.

Maradona, 44, appears to be making a good recovery after undergoing drug rehabilitation last year and a gastric bypass operation in Colombia last month.

Maradona's doctor, Alfredo Cahe, said the former Argentina captain had lost 33 kg since the stomach stapling operation.

Maradona has yet to announce whether he would accept, although he said on Thursday that he would give Macri priority.

He has also been linked with a similar post for the Argentina national team and with the vacant senior coach's job at San Lorenzo.

Maradona was due to leave Argentina on Friday for Cuba, where he said he had personal matters to attend to. He was then due to travel to Spain to play golf with Brazilian striker Ronaldo.

Macri said he hoped Maradona would start work on June 1.
