LONDON, England -- Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has signed a new five-year contract with the club crowned Premiership champions for the first time in 50 years last weekend.
Mourinho joined Chelsea last June after leading Porto to the Champions League title -- and his deal extension follows the west London club's semifinal defeat in the same competition.
His initial three-year contract was reportedly worth five million pounds-a-year ($9.5m) and the 42-year-old can now expect to collect considerably more.
The Portuguese coach has been rewarded for an outstanding first season at Stamford Bridge during which the Blues also won the League Cup.
Chelsea's hopes of a treble ended Tuesday when they were beaten 1-0 at the Champions League last-four stage by English rivals Liverpool.
"I am delighted to be signing this new contract. My heart is with Chelsea and the fantastic group of players I have. They have done a great job this season," said Mourinho.
"But the vision of the owner and the board for the future of Chelsea is also one I want to be part of.
"I am totally behind this project and their support in achieving it means Chelsea is the place where I will be happiest in my work. I cannot imagine another club or situation where I would be happier."
Mourinho was already the best-paid manager in the Premiership and his new deal is expected to net him around five million pounds a year even before bonuses or commercial deals.
The Chelsea chief finalized terms over his new contract, which comes into effect at the start of next season, on Wednesday.
He had returned to work despite having given his players two days off to celebrate their title success and to recover from the setback of their Champions League defeat.
Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon said: "This is great news for everybody concerned. Both the club and Jose share a long-term vision for the future, that was clear from the moment we first met.
"We talked then about a 10 year plan for Chelsea and Jose wanted to be an integral part of building that.
"The outstanding success of the team this season is a great platform for that building process. As soon as the League Cup was won talks over a new deal began as it was apparent to all sides that a longer commitment was the way forward.
"This deal demonstrates Jose's commitment to Chelsea and also our certainty that he is the best manager to take the club into a new, exciting and successful era."
Mourinho arrived at Stamford Bridge as replacement for Italian Claudio Ranieri.
