Win edges Torino closer to Serie A
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSMILAN, Italy -- Seven-times Italian champions Torino took a step towards returning to Serie A with a 2-1 victory at Perugia in the first leg of their promotion play-off final. The two teams meet again in the second leg at the Delle Alpi stadium in Turin on Sunday when Torino will have more than a goal advantage. Even if Perugia win by a single goal to ensure the tie ends level, Torino will go through by virtue of finishing in a higher position in the regular Serie B season. Defender Federico Balzaretti put Torino ahead when he finished off a counter-attack in the 21st minute. Perugia equalised a minute before the break with a close-range effort from striker Giuseppe Mascara. Former Chievo forward Massimo Marazzina grabbed the winner in the 56th minute. Torino were relegated from Serie A in 2003 while Perugia went down last season after a play-off defeat by Fiorentina. Genoa and Empoli won automatic promotion from Serie B while Atalanta, Brescia and Bologna were relegated from the top flight. Cosmi named by UdineseUdinese have appointed former Perugia and Genoa coach Serse Cosmi on a two-year contract. Cosmi resigned as Genoa coach on Tuesday despite taking the team to the Serie B title last season. The 47-year-old, known for constantly wearing a baseball cap, replaces Luciano Spalletti who guided Udinese to fourth place in Serie A. Although Udinese earned a place in the Champions League qualifying round, Spalletti opted to quit and move to Roma.
