DAKAR, Senegal -- Senegal have sacked French coach Guy Stephan after last Saturday's 2-2 draw with Togo jeopardised their chances of reaching the 2006 World Cup.

"The contract between Guy Stephan and the state of Senegal has been ended," said Senegal Football Federation president Said Fakhry.

Sports Minister Youssoupha Ndiaye was fired on Wednesday after mounting criticism of the team's performances.

"There was no debate," said Stephan, who has been in the post since January 2003 but has failed to take the team to the heights achieved by former coach Bruno Metsu.

He added: "I think Senegal can still qualify for the World Cup, even though the chances are not as positive as they were.

"For the final matches, it will be up to my successor and I wish whoever it is good luck," he added.

The draw with Group One leaders Togo left Senegal third in the table, two points adrift of their opponents on Saturday and a point behind Zambia with two matches left in the race to reach next year's World Cup finals in Germany.

Only the winners from the five African zone groups will qualify for the finals.

Senegal beat former colonial power France, who were the reigning world champions, in the opening game of the 2002 World Cup on their way to the quarter-finals.
