Kenya's 'closed doors' punishment
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSNAIROBI, Kenya -- FIFA have ordered Kenya to play a World Cup qualifier against African champions Tunisia "behind closed doors" in Nairobi on September 2, a statement said Monday. The sanction follows a stampede by by fans at the Nyayo National Stadium for the qualifier against Morocco on June 18 when a 15-year-old schoolboy died. Acting on the report of the match commissioner, FIFA's Disciplinary Committee also fined the Kenya Football Federation (KFF) 25,000 swiss francs. "Prior to the match, a crowd managed to force down gates to the stadium leaving a 15-year-old supporter dead and 15 other fans injured," the FIFA statement said. "A series of other incidents also took place before, during and after the game." Kenya is scheduled to play Tunisia in Tunis on August 17 in the first leg match which was postponed from 2004 after the East African nation was banned by FIFA owing to government interference in the sport. But KFF officials said they would appeal the latest ban, arguing that the punishment was too harsh for a country struggling to improve its flagging sport. "We will appeal against that decision tomorrow. We feel the punish is too harsh on us and are optimistic it will overturned," KFF's acting general-secretary Titus Kasuve said.
