Ailton's signing for Besiktas has been ratified thanks to Schalke

GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany -- Brazilian striker Ailton has been allowed to complete his move to Turkish side Besiktas after Schalke 04 agreed to cancel his contract.

Ailton was contracted at Schalke until June 2006 but both parties reached an agreement to enable his 3.5 million euro ($4.2m) transfer to go through.

"Everything has gone smoothly and Ailton has accepted our terms," confirmed general manager Rudi Assauer.

Ailton, 32, scored 14 goals for Schalke last season but was often reprimanded for voicing his opinion on tactics and team selection.

He previously played six seasons with Werder Bremen, with whom he won the German title in 2003/2004, the German Cup in 2004 and took the title of the top scorer of the season with 28 goals.
