MADRID, Spain -- Real Betis winger Denilson, once the world's most expensive player, has secured dual Spanish and Brazilian nationality.

"Getting a Spanish passport is good for Betis as it frees a place for the club to sign another overseas player," said Denilson.

"It also makes it easier for me in case I have to leave for another club because I now go as a European Union player."

Under Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) rules, Primera Liga clubs are allowed up to three non-EU players in their squads.

The 27-year-old Brazilian international dropped out of favor with coach Llorenc Serra Ferrer last season.

Betis president Manuel Ruiz de Lopera has refused to allow Denilson to leave on loan, preferring a transfer.

Denilson joined Betis from Sao Paulo in 1998 for a world record fee of $35 million.
