YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSHELSINKI, Finland -- Roy Hodgson has been confirmed as the new coach of the Finland national side. The 58-year-old Englishman, who is currently coaching Viking Stavanger in Norway, will take over in August 2006 and will continue until 2008. Jyrki Heliskoski, who had coached Finland's under-21 side, became coach of the senior side in June after they suffered a 4-0 defeat by the Netherlands in a World Cup qualifier. He is expected to remain in charge until August next year and to then work as an assistant coach under Hodgson. Hodgson coached Switzerland in the 1994 World Cup finals and has also coached the United Arab Emirates, Blackburn, Udinese, Halmstads and FC Copenhagen. Finland have never reached the World Cup or European Championship finals. In the current World Cup qualifying campaign, they lie fourth in Group 1 with 12 points. The Netherlands lead with 22 points, followed by the Czech Republic (21) and Romania (19).
