Two-goal Oliveira ends Monaco bid

The Spanish side, who won the first leg 1-0 thanks to a late goal scored by their other Brazilian striker Edu, ousted the beaten 2004 finalists 3-2 on aggregate. Betis doubled their lead from the first leg in the 17th minute when Edu outpaced the Monaco defense and set up Oliveira for an easy header at the near post. Monaco replied 15 minutes later when Spanish midfielder Gerard half-volleyed home just under the bar after a pass from Olivier Kapo. Monaco however squandered a golden opportunity of taking the lead when young midfielder Camel Meriem missed a penalty after a foul on France international defender Patrice Evra. But Monaco went 2-1 ahead on the night when striker Toifilou Maoulida headed home after 63 minutes, two minutes after replacing Kapo. Oliveira dashed the hopes of Monaco's 20,000 supporters fifteen minutes from time firing home into the far corner of the net after a swift counter-attack. Monaco will now compete in the UEFA Cup this season while Betis will enjoy a first season at soccer's top table.
