Brazil match-fixing ref suspended
ZURICH, Switzerland -- World governing body FIFA has suspended Brazilian referee Edilson Pereira de Carvalho, who is subject of a police probe into alleged match-fixing in Brazil. "FIFA has suspended worldwide and until further notice ... Edilson Pereira de Carvalho in the light of the Brazilian federal police's decision to open a criminal investigation...," FIFA said. Alleged match-fixing was centered on the towns of Sao Paulo and Piracicaba and involved bets of around 70,000 euros being placed on matches. "The Brazilian football association has informed FIFA that it has also opened an investigation into the case and that it will take all the necessary measures to resolve the matter," it added. Brazil's Veja newspaper said Saturday that Brazilian championship matches had been fixed in favor of internet gamblers in a scandal involving at least two referees, who had been arrested. Police, using telephone taps, were able to target Pereira de Carvalho who was accused of "selling" and "trying to sell" the results of up to 25 matches in which he officiated since January. Those games included some in the Libertadores Cup. Veja claimed that one of the frauds involving Pereira was a league game between Vasco and Figueirense on August 7 which Vasco won 2-1. According to police, Pereira was heard saying: "I am going to award a foul in the middle of the field and if anyone protests, I will send them off" in an effort to ease the way for a victory for Vasco. Radio station Jovem Pan de Sao Paulo said Saturday that Pereira and another official Paulo Jose Danelon had been arrested. Another suspect in the case Nagib Fayad was also arrested. The prosecutor of the Superior Tribunal for Sporting Justice (STJD), Paulo Schmidt, said that if the allegations were true then 11 matches officiated by Pereira during the Brazilian championship could be annulled.
