Gresko returns for Spain showdown
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSBRATISLAVA, Slovakia -- Slovakia have recalled Vratislav Gresko to their squad for the World Cup playoff against Spain. The Blackburn midfielder has missed their last two qualifying matches due to a knee injury. However, Slovakia, hoping to reach the World Cup for the first time as an independent state, will be without injured midfielders Marek Mintal and Karel Kisel for the first leg in Spain on November 12. Coach Dusan Galis has included five players from Artmedia Bratislava in a 34-man squad after their impressive performances in Champions League Group H. "We named a bigger squad because the domestic league is still going on," Galis said. "We will see if some players do not get injured, while others are not yet fully healed. We will then narrow the squad to 22 names." The return leg in Slovakia takes place on November 16. Squad: Goalkeepers: Kamil Contofalsky (Zenit St Petersburg), Juraj Cobej (Artmedia Bratislava), Marian Kelemen (Tenerife) Defenders: Roman Kratochvil (Denizlispor), Stanislav Varga (Celtic), Radoslav Zabavnik (Sofia), Marian Had (Brno), Marian Cisovsky (Zilina), Michal Hanek (Dinamo Moscow), Jan Durica (Artmedia Bratislava), Maros Klimpl (Ostrava), Martin Skrtel (Zenit St. Petersburg), Martin Petras (Sparta Prague), Marek Cech (Porto), Matej Krajvcik (Slavia Prague) Midfielders: Peter Hlinka and Jozef Valachovic (Rapid Vienna), Jan Kozak, Balasz Borbely, and Branislav Fodrek (Artmedia Bratislava), Marek Sapara and Igor Zofcak (Ruzomberok) Rastislav Michalik (Ried), Vladimir Janocko (Austria Vienna), Miroslav Karhan (Wolfsburg), Vrastislav Gresko (Blackburn), Ivan Hodur (Liberec), Dusan Svento (Slavia Prague), Milan Ivana (Slovacko) Forwards: Lubor Reiter (Chicago Fire) Filip Holosko (Liberec), Robert Vittek (Nuremberg), Szilard Nemeth (Middlesbrough), Stanislav Sestak (Zilina)
