Serbia must play in empty stadium
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSBELGRADE, Serbia and Montenegro -- FIFA have ordered Serbia and Montenegro to play one home match in an empty stadium after crowd trouble during the home World Cup qualifier against Bosnia on October 12. FIFA has also fined the Serbia & Montenegro FA 23,000 euros while the Bosnian FA has been fined 26,000 euros after fans fought during the match. Serbia and Montenegro are likely to serve the ban in their first Euro 2008 qualifying match next year. Rival fans pelted each other with flares and seats during the politically charged fixture, which the Serbs won 1-0 to qualify for next year's World Cup finals in Germany. FIFA has also fined the Croatian Football Federation 26,000 euros following trouble from their fans during the World Cup qualifier with Hungary in Budapest. Serbian FA chief Zoran Damjanovic said he hoped supporters had "learned a lesson" from the FIFA penalty. "I hope the fans will come to realise it makes much more sense to invest these financial means in the development of football and its infrastructure rather than throw money away on fines," Damjanovic added.
