Abidal faces a 12-week lay-off after breaking a foot in Martinique

PARIS, France -- Olympique Lyon's France defender Eric Abidal will be out of action for 12 weeks because of a fractured left foot, the French champions said on Friday.

Abidal had to be substituted because of the injury 15 minutes into France's 3-2 friendly win over Costa Rica on Wednesday in Martinique.

Lyon coach Gerard Houllier had criticized France's decision to play the match three days before a friendly against Germany at the Stade de France.

He had threatened not to release his players.

Lyon have already qualified for the knock-out stages of the Champions League and are currently nine points clear at the top of the French first division.
