Paraguay take four-team tournament
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSTEHRAN, Iran -- A goal from Dante Lopez gave Paraguay a 1-0 win over Macedonia to secure their victory in the four-nation tournament in Iran. Iran claimed third place earlier in the day with a 2-0 victory over fellow World Cup qualifiers Togo. Paraguay, who have qualified for the World Cup finals, went ahead in the 11th minute when Lopez netted Ignacio Paniagua's cross from the right, his third goal of the tournament. Lopez almost doubled the lead 10 minutes from time, scything through the Macedonia defence before sliding a shot just right of the goal. Iran's lackluster win slightly eased the pressure on Croatian coach Branko Ivankovic who has been facing bitter criticism from Iranian media over recent defeats. Veteran captain Ali Daei, the world's leading international scorer with over 100 goals, scored a farcical penalty at the third attempt to give Iran the lead in the 11th minute. His first two attempts, the first of which was parried by keeper Tchagnirou Ouronimini, were disallowed after players encroached into the box. Daei finally got on to the scoreboard with a scorching strike into the bottom left corner. Togo had their chances with some surging counter-attacks but they conceded a second penalty after 58 minutes, with Hannover's Vahid Hashemian comfortably converting the spot-kick. Serbia overcome weatherSerbia and Montenegro beat China 2-0 on Sunday in a friendly marred by rain and the poor quality of the Olympic Stadium pitch in Nanjing, eastern China. Defender Nenad Djordjevic got the Serbs' opener early in the second half with a crisp header off a free-kick and Nikola Zigic headed their second 16 minutes later. Serbia and Montenegro qualified for next year's World Cup finals in Germany by beating Balkan rivals Bosnia-Herzegovina.
