England set to bid for 2018 finals
![]() British chancellor Gordon Brown shows off his football skills as he launches a possible 2018 bid. LONDON, England -- England are set to launch a bid to stage the 2018 World Cup after the government commissioned a feasibility study into hosting football's global showpiece. "It's about time it came back to us. I believe we've got a very, very good chance of winning this," British chancellor Gordon Brown said on Friday. The government are buoyed by Britain's success in bringing the 2012 Olympics to London. The study, which will be overseen by the Treasury and the Department of Media, Culture and Sport, is similar to the one conducted before that winning bid. England's Football Association said it won't decide on whether to throw its hat into the ring until late 2006 at the earliest. The decision on hosts will be made by world governing body FIFA in 2012. "Any successful World Cup bid needs government support, as we saw with the 2012 Olympic success," FA chief executive Brian Barwick said. "If the 2018 World Cup comes to Europe, we will be giving very serious consideration to making a bid." England last hosted the World Cup in 1966, which is also the last time they won the competition. A bid to host the 2006 finals, which will be held in Germany, ended in disappointment with one of the bid leaders, former sports minister Tony Banks, revealing on Friday that they tried to pull out before the final decision.
