Underdogs Doncaster demolish Villa
LONDON, England -- Doncaster claimed their second Premiership scalp when they beat Aston Villa 3-0 to move into the English League Cup quarterfinals for the first time on Tuesday. The Yorkshire club knocked out Manchester City on penalties in the second round and their latest triumph piled more pressure on embattled Villa boss David O'Leary. Elsewhere in the fourth round Arsenal defeated Championship leaders Reading 3-0 at Highbury while Birmingham beat Millwall 4-3 on penalties after the tie ended 2-2 after extra time. Goals by Jose Antonio Reyes and Robin van Persie, the only first team regulars in the side, and Arturo Lupoli, ensured Arsenal's progress to the last eight. At their Belle Vue ground Third Division Doncaster, the lowest ranked team left in the tournament, outclassed five-times League Cup winners Villa. They went ahead when Michael McIndoe beat Thomas Sorensen from the spot after Liam Ridgewell handled James Coppinger's cross in the box. Rovers went close to a second through both McIndoe and Coppinger with Villa's best effort a long-range strike from James Milner. Doncaster though got the second goal they deserved eight minutes after half-time when striker Paul Heffernan, played in by Lewis Guy, confidently side-footed the ball home from 18 yards. It was Heffernan's third League Cup goal in two games after he scored twice in the 2-0 third round win over Gillingham. Villa manager David O'Leary brought on striker Kevin Phillips in place of defender JLloyd Samuel just short of the hour mark. But it made little difference. After Villa had seen a penalty appeal rejected by referee Mike Dean when Milan Baros went down in the box, Doncaster went 3-0 up in the 79th minute. Sean Thornton weaved his way past several Villa defenders on the edge of the box and then let fly with a deflected shot. Sorensen got his fingertips to the ball but the keeper couldn't prevent the ball finishing in the top left corner of his net.
