Monaco are back in UEFA Cup frame
![]() Take off: Monaco's Patrice Evra flies high as his team go top of their group LONDON, England -- Former Champions League finalists Monaco are back in the frame for the UEFA Cup with a convincing 2-0 victory at Slavia Prague in a Group A match on Wednesday. With only one round to play in the group phase, the French side now lead the section and should be assured of a place in the knockout stages. Russia's Lokomotiv Moscow qualified after winning 4-0 away to Israeli team Maccabi Petah Tikva and now lead Group B from Palermo and Espanyol. On Wednesday Espanyol earned a 1-1 draw at Brondby in a match that saw both sides finish with ten players after red cards for Fredson (69) and Dan Anton Johansen (79) respectively. Lokomotiv have seven points, Italy's Palermo and Spain's Espanyol five each and Brondby four, with three clubs qualifying. Group C remains wide open after German club Hertha Berlin held to a goalless draw in Sampdoria. Both teams have five points from three matches - one more than Lens who did not play on Wednesday. Romania side Steaua Bucharest beat Halmstad 3-0 and top the group on seven points -- and that guarantees them staying in the competition. Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk moved off the bottom of group D with their first victory in four matches after a 3-2 win at Grasshoppers Zurich, but it was too little too late. Dutch club AZ Alkmaar, who won 2-0 at Litex Lovech and Middlesbrough share the lead in the group with seven points, while Litex have six -- and all three have qualified. The four other groups are playing their fourth round of matches on Thursday. The top three from each group advance to the knockout stages, where they are joined by the eight third-placed teams from the Champions League.
