Zamora adds to Birmingham's misery
![]() Zamora, left, equalized after Heskey, right, gave Birmingham the lead West Ham, inspired by a brilliant piece of trickery from Bobby Zamora, held on to secure their first Premiership victory over Birmingham, 2-1, on Monday. Birmingham, who have not won a home league game all season, were booed off after failing to take the intitative following an early Emile Heskey goal. Hammers struck back through Zamora's piece of wizadry -- and a Marlon Harewood strike on the stroke of half-time gave them all three points. The result left West Ham unchanged in ninth position in the Premiership on 22 points, while Birmingham remain deep in the relegation zone, second from bottom with just nine points. Heskey opened the scoring in the 11th minute. David Dunn battled to win the ball off Yossi Benayoun in midfield, delivered a defence-splitting pass to Heskey and the England striker showed a great first touch to beat goalkeeper Roy Carroll and stroke the ball left-footed into the net from an angle. But Birmingham faded in the second 20 minutes off the first half, and were made to pay by the visitors. West Ham's statement of intent was cruelly denied first out, however, by Belgian goalkeeper Nico Vaesen, who produced a brilliant reflex diving save to keep out a Marlon Harewood header off a Benayoun cross in the 22nd minute. It was 15 minutes later that Zamora struck, making the most of his late call-up for the injured Teddy Sheringham (calf) with a goal that will surely go down as a contender for goal of the season. Chesting down a throw-in into the Birmingham penalty box, Zamora - with his back to the goal - chipped the ball over a defender, turned and dribbled past two more before nutmegging Vaesen. Harewood made it two for the Hammers just before half-time, blasting in a cross by Matthew Etherington that was laid off by Benayoun.
