Milan players celebrate on their way to the Champions knockout stages

MILAN, Italy (Reuters) -- Brazilian Kaka scored twice when AC Milan beat Schalke 3-2 on Tuesday to take their place in the last 16 of the Champions League at the expense of the German team.

Milan won Group E with 11 points with Dutch side PSV Eindhoven qualifying second on 10 points after their 2-0 win over Turkey's Fenerbahce.

Schalke ended third on eight points and have to settle for a place in the UEFA Cup.

In an enthralling game, set-piece specialist Andrea Pirlo put Milan ahead in the 42nd minute with a superb, bending free kick but within two minutes the Germans had pulled level through a Christian Poulsen header.

Six-times former champions Milan restored their lead in the 52nd minute when Andriy Shevchenko ran at the Schalke defense and then picked out Brazilian Kaka who fired home a low diagonal shot.

Kaka added his second and Milan's third on the hour but a deflected shot from Brazilian Lincoln in the 66th minute gave Schalke hope.

If the match had finished 3-3 the Germans would have gone through at Milan's expense.

The game ended in ugly scenes with clashes involving several players on the final whistle after Milan's Gennaro Gattuso confronted Schalke's Danish midfielder Poulsen.

With several punches thrown UEFA's disciplinary body may well have some video evidence to look at.

PSV power on

PSV Eindhoven powered through to the knockout phase when goals by captain Philip Cocu and Jefferson Farfan gave them a 2-0 home victory over Turkey's Fenerbahce.

Midfielder Cocu lost his marker and headed a free kick by Farfan into the corner of the net after 14 minutes in Eindhoven.

Farfan then converted from close range five minutes from time to seal victory, although the 1988 champions earlier rode their luck when Timmy Simons handled in the area but the referee waved away Fenerbahce's penalty appeals.

"We gave everything but missed the power and sharpness in attack to make the difference," said Fenerbahce coach Cristoph Daum.

"It was no surprise that PSV played with a well-organized defense and fearlessly closed the way to their goal.

"The happiness in Eindhoven is understandable and for them it is not important how they achieved this result."
