Monaco and Hamburg reach KO stage

LONDON, England -- Monaco and Hamburg SV both won their final Group A games on Thursday to progress to the final-32 knockout phase of the UEFA Cup.

But Sampdoria missed out when Issam Jemaa gave Lens 2-1 victory in time added on in their Group C clash, Hertha Berlin claiming third place in the group ahead of the Italians.

More than 46,000 fans watched Emile Mpenza seal Hamburg's victory after 57 minutes against Slavia Prague who had keeper Matus Kozacik sent off after 28 minutes.

Kozacik was red carded for bringing down Mpenza on his way to goal on the half hour.

The Belgian missed the spot kick but Hamburg stayed in control and Mpenza lifted the ball over substitute keeper Aleksander Seliga for the second goal in the 57th minute.

Sergei Barbarez had headed in a Stefan Beinlich cross to open the scoring after nine minutes, but Slavia still qualified after ending third in the group.

Norwegians Viking and Bulgaria's CSKA Sofia, who lost 2-1 at Monaco, finished in the last two places of the five-team group and were eliminated.

Olivier Kapo and Sebastien Squillaci opened a two-goal gap for Monaco before CSKA replied through Velizar Dimitrov seven minutes from time.

Palermo defeated Brondby 3-0 to finish atop Group B with eight points.

Nigerian striker Stephen Makinwa opened the scoring in the 26th minute before Leandro Rinaudo's double sealed a comfortable win for the Serie A side.

Rytter sees red

Brondby, who needed to win to qualify for the last 32, were reduced to 10 men just before half time when Thomas Rytter was sent off for two yellow cards.

Palermo, for whom a draw would have been enough, join group winners Lokomotiv Moscow in Friday's draw.

Espanyol defeated Maccabi Petach-Tikva 1-0 and finished second, also with eight points. Lokomotiv Moscow did not play but had already advanced with seven points.

In Group C, Lens took the lead after 24 minutes against Sampdoria who equalized through Francesco Flachi on 24 -- only to suffer their cruel late fate.

Steaua Bucharest, who drew 0-0 at Hertha, had already advanced, finishing on top with eight points while the Germans also progressed.

All three places in Group D were already decided with Middlesbrough, AZ Alkmaar and Litex Lovech advancing.

In Thursday's games, AZ defeated Grasshoppers 1-0, and Middlesbrough beat Litex 2-0.

Massimo Maccarone claimed both of Middlesbrough's two goals, and Danny Koevermans scored in AZ Alkmaar's victory.

Strasbourg, AS Roma, FC Basel, Marseille, Levski Sofia, SC Heerenveen, Rapid Bucharest, Shakhtar Donetsk, Stuttgart, Sevilla, Zenit St. Petersburg, and Bolton have already advanced.

The eight third-place teams from the Champions League will also play in the next round: FC Brugge, FC Thun, Udinese, Lille, Schalke, Rosenborg, Real Betis and Artmedia Bratislava.

The draw for the final 32 of the UEFA Cup, and the final 16 of the Champions League, is on Friday at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
