Matthaeus made to wait by Hungary
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSBUDAPEST, Hungary (Reuters) -- Hungarian Football Association chiefs postponed a decision about the future of German coach Lothar Matthaeus at a meeting on Wednesday. The 44-year-old's contract expires on December 31 and it is still unclear whether he will get a second chance to steer Hungary to a major tournament. Hungary have failed to qualify for a World Cup or European championship finals since 1986. Under Matthaeus, who has been in charge since December 2003, Hungary finished a disappointing fourth in 2006 World Cup qualifying Group Eight behind Croatia, Sweden and Bulgaria. HFA president Imre Bozoky said a decision about the future of Matthaeus, the former midfielder who was capped 150 times for Germany, is unlikely to be made before January. Stoichkov staysHristo Stoichkov will remain as Bulgaria's coach until the summer of 2008, Bulgarian Football Union president Borislav Mihailov said on Wednesday. Mihailov told reporters Stoichkov, 39, who succeeded Plamen Markov after Bulgaria's poor performance at the 2004 European championship, would be assisted by his former team-mate Krasimir Bezinski. Bulgaria failed to qualify for next year's World Cup finals in Germany after finishing behind Sweden and Croatia in their qualifying group.
