Former Hungarian coach Baroti dies
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSBUDAPEST, Hungary -- Lajos Baroti, who coached Hungary in four World Cups, has died at the age of 91. Baroti played twice for Hungary and, as a coach, led his country at the World Cups of 1958, 1962, 1966 and 1978. "He was the best coach in our history," said Hungarian Football Association president Imre Bozoky. "He has most appearances as national coach (117) but that is not what made him special. His love of the game and stamina was unbelievable." Baroti guided the team to the bronze medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics and to third place at the 1964 European Championship in Spain. "Even if you try to accept the inevitable, it is hard to cope with the sorrow when one of your friends dies," said former Hungary goalkeeper Gyula 'the Panther' Grosics. "He built a fantastic team after our generation got old and the team fell apart early in the 60s."
