Tropical Storm Vince now a hurricane20th named storm of season not expected to threaten land
MIAMI, Florida (CNN) -- Tropical Storm Vince became a rare eastern Atlantic hurricane Sunday evening, but the Category 1 storm was not expected to threaten land, the National Hurricane Center reported. At 5 p.m. ET, Vince -- the 20th named storm of the unusually busy Atlantic storm season -- was about 125 miles northwest of the Madeira Islands and headed northeast at 6 mph, the hurricane center reported. Its top winds were 75 mph, making it a minimal hurricane. The storm is not threatening land and is expected to weaken Monday as it merges with a cold front moving in from the northwest, forecasters said. Vince took shape as a non-tropical low pressure system between the Azores and the Canary Islands, off the west coast of Africa, and became a tropical storm earlier Sunday. Tropical waves often form in the area before heading west to become named storms closer to the Caribbean.
