Chilean quake toll stands at 11
SANTIAGO, Chile -- The death toll from the 7.9 magnitude earthquake that hit Chile on Monday evening stands at 11, the country's Interior Ministry said.
The toll includes six people -- five of them family members -- that were buried in a home after the quake rattled the northern region of Tarapaca near the Bolivian border, about 70 miles (113 km) east-northeast of Iquique (population 200,000).
Five others died elsewhere in Chile.
The quake was the world's third strongest temblor since the quake that set off an Asian tsunami in December, which killed about 170,000 people. (Full story)
Interior Minister Jorge Correa said several people were injured but did not provide a number or other details, The Associated Press reported.
In addition, several homes and roads were damaged. He said there could be more victims in some isolated communities, but added no details were immediately available because of poor communications, AP said.
Power supply and communications were interrupted in Iquique and Arica, another port city near Chile's border with Peru, AP reported.
