(CNN) -- About 30 people have been killed in a bus explosion in east China's Jiangxi Province, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.

Xinhua, quoting local police in Nanchang, said a double-decker bus destined for eastern Zhejiang province from Shenzhen city in southern Guangdong province, blew up at about 4:00 a.m. local time Thursday (8.00 p.m.GMT Wednesday) on an expressway near Shangrao city.

The blast also damaged nearby houses and injured several people. Police said seven people were taken to hospital.

According to the Xinhua report, police said the exact death toll was hard to determine because many of the victims were in pieces.

The expressway is blocked and an investigation is under way, the report said.
