Quake rattles Japan's main island
TOKYO, Japan -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.4 shook the eastern and northeastern parts of Japan's main island of Honshu early on Monday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The affected areas included Fukushima and Ibaraki prefectures, Kyodo news agency reported.
It said there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from the quake, which struct at 2:57 a.m. local time Monday (1757 GMT). No tsunami alert was issued.
The quake registered an intensity of 4 on the Japanese seismic scale of 7 in Futaba in Fukushima and Daigo in Ibaraki, Kyodo reported.
