Bangladesh ferry accident turns deadly
Police: Dozens missing, one dead
DHAKA, Bangladesh (CNN) -- A woman died and 49 people were missing after a passenger ferry collided with a docked ferry and capsized in a river in southern Bangladesh, local police said.
The accident near the town of Madaripur happened about 8:30 a.m. local time Saturday (10:30 p.m. ET Friday), police said.
Madaripur is on the Ganges River delta about 230 kilometers (143 miles) south of Dhaka, the capital.
Of the 75 passengers aboard the ferry only 25 came ashore, police said.
The dead woman was 45 years old, police said.
A search is under way for survivors.
Accidents on rivers in Bangladesh kill hundreds of people every year, particularly during the rainy season from April through November, according to a Reuters report.
They are often caused by overcrowding on vessels in disrepair. A lack of safety awareness also is often a contributing factor.
