LAHORE, Pakistan (CNN) -- Pakistani troops battled suspected al Qaeda and Taliban militants for a third straight day in the mountainous region along the Afghan border, known as North Waziristan, a Pakistani intelligence official told CNN Sunday. The fighting and related operations have left at least 37 militants and 14 soldiers dead. Three soldiers were killed in the overnight fighting and eight more were wounded. According to the intelligence official, the Pakistani army killed two "terrorists" and arrested two others after an exchange of gunfire at a checkpoint in North Waziristan. The army recovered important documents from the militants, the official said. Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan said there have so far been no reports of any high-profile militants involved in the fighting. The Pakistani army launched the operation on Thursday, after receiving information that militants were in the area, an army spokesman said. Troops backed by helicopter gunships pounded villages in the area, forcing hundreds of residents to flee. The operation was taking place in the Khatai Kalee area, about five miles from Miran Shah, the capital of North Waziristan, about 250 miles southwest of Islamabad.
