Madrid block burns 'like a candle'
MADRID, Spain (CNN) -- A landmark office building in downtown Madrid was engulfed in flames early Sunday, and flaming chunks of debris fell to the street as harried firefighters tried to keep the structure from collapsing.
Three firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation, said Manuel Lamela, health adviser for the Madrid regional government.
Authorities said there was no reason to believe the fire was an act of terrorism.
Video showed huge flames four hours after the fire began, and the upper floors were metal skeletons.
CNN journalist Monica Sanz reported from the scene that the upper floors of the building appeared to be tilting.
Hundreds of spectators watched from the street, many snapping pictures with cell phones.
The fire started about 11:30 Saturday night on the 21st floor of the 32-story Windsor Tower, which was undergoing renovations, but would likely have been empty anyway on a Saturday night.
The flames consumed upper floors before sweeping through the rest of the building.
Janvier Sanz, regional fire chief, said he couldn't predict how long the structure would remain relatively intact, but firefighters were spraying water from the terraces of adjacent buildings.
Some in Madrid consider the district the city's "little Manhattan," and there were concerns that the fire could spread to nearby apartment buildings.
Magdalena Alvarez, minister of development, said a short circuit may have started the fire, but it would be investigated.
Many government officials were at the scene near the main boulevard, the Paseo de la Castellana.
