ATHENS (CNN) -- Authorities on Saturday verified that blood found in the cockpit of the Cypriot airliner that crashed near Athens, Greece, this week was that of a flight attendant, according to a source close to the investigation.

Mystery has shrouded the final moments of Helios Airways Flight 522 before it crashed on August 16, killing all 121 people on board. The plane had left Larnaca, Cyprus, for Athens on its way to Prague, Czech Republic.

Despite identifying the blood as belonging to Cypriot attendant Andreas Prodromou, investigators have not confirmed he was in the cockpit at the time of the crash.

The body of a female flight attendant was found amid the cockpit's wreckage.

Flying alongside the unresponsive flight, pilots of two Greek F-16 jet fighters saw two people, thought to be crew members, moving around in the cockpit and the co-pilot slumped over the controls. The other pilot could not be seen.

On Tuesday the chief coroner of the investigation said that the co-pilot was alive when the plane went down. (Full story)

Investigators are looking into whether a catastrophic loss of air pressure occurred.

The fighter pilots reported seeing through the cabin windows that the oxygen masks had dropped from the ceiling of the plane.

Witnesses at the crash site reported that some passengers' faces still had masks attached.

CNN's Anthee Carassava contributed to this report.
