Anti-missile operation launched in northern Gaza
JERUSALEM (CNN) -- The Israeli military launched an operation in northern Gaza on Sunday that a spokesman said is aimed at stopping Palestinian Qassam rocket attacks on Israel.
The operation centers on Jabalya and the Gaza town of Beit Hanoun, where Israel's military says many Qassams are fired across the border into Israeli towns.
Two Qassams were fired into Sderot, Israel, where one woman suffered shock, the Israeli Army said.
Israeli helicopter fire destroyed two Qassam launchers loaded with rockets north of the Jabalya Palestinian refugee camp, according to a military statement.
Also in northern Gaza, an Israeli civilian was severely wounded Sunday from a mortar attack in the Erez industrial area, the Army said.
Earlier in the day -- after a three-day operation in southern Gaza -- Israeli forces pulled out of the Khan Yunis Palestinian refugee camp and redeployed around Gush Katif, a block of Jewish settlements between Rafah and Khan Yunis, an Israel Defense Forces spokeswoman said.
On Saturday, in an apparent Qassam misfire, a rocket slammed into a Palestinian home in the northern Gaza village of Beit Lahaya, killing a 10-year-old girl, Palestinian security sources said.
Last September, Israel launched a major military operation into Gaza after a Qassam fired into Sderot killed a 2-year-old Israeli girl and her 4-year-old brother. ( Full story)
