Hariri probe to seek Syrian help

BEIRUT, Lebanon (CNN) -- The head of the United Nations probe of the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri said investigators believe the five suspects already arrested are not the only people involved in the bombing, but only the cooperation of Syria will give them the full picture. German prosecutor Detlev Mehlis told reporters Thursday that he is ready to travel to Syria to seek that government's cooperation. "There were some problems, but I am optimistic that these problems can be solved, because they will have to be solved, because without this cooperation, we will not have the full picture," Mehlis said. Hariri and 20 others were killed by a truck bomb that exploded in downtown Beirut on February 14. Immediate suspicion that Syria was involved in the bombing led to outrage in Lebanon that resulted in Syria's military withdrawal from Lebanon. Mehlis said his investigation was "proceeding steadily" after the arrests and questioning of the five suspects, including four pro-Syrian generals and a lawmaker this week. "We feel we took a very important step, but these five suspects we have arrested in our assessment are only part of the picture, so we will have to further investigate and we do think more people are involved."
