BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Coalition forces killed six insurgents in northern Iraq on Sunday during raids on al Qaeda in Iraq safe houses, the U.S. military said.

A military news release said insurgents attacked coalition forces as the U.S. and Iraqi troops entered a house in Tal Afar, to the west of the major city of Mosul.

Four insurgents were killed and four enemy fighters were captured, the military said. In an ensuing gun battle with people in another house, coalition forces killed two more insurgents.

U.S. warplanes blew up the two houses and secondary explosions indicated weapons caches, the military said.

Iraqi government officials said that coalition forces have killed 157 terrorists in Tal Afar since August 26, and nine Iraqi soldiers and six police officers have died.

There have been 440 people detained in the town, which is not far from the Syrian border and has been a hot spot for insurgent violence for months.

An insurgent group claimed last week that the uptick in bombings and shootings in Baghdad during the past several days was in retaliation for the latest Tal Afar offensive. The claim, posted of a militant Web site, has not been verified by CNN.

Iraqi politician killed

An Iraqi member of parliament was among three people fatally shot Saturday while traveling in a convoy to Baghdad from Mosul, and a second member of parliament was wounded, Iraqi police sources said.

The drive-by shooting occurred about 7 p.m. Saturday, police said.

Faris Nasser Hussein, along with his brother and his driver, were killed in the attack and Haidar Qassem Shanaw was wounded.

The incident occurred in Mashahda, a town about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Baghdad.

U.S. soldier killed

A U.S. soldier was killed Saturday by a homemade bomb near Al Asad, Iraq, coalition forces said Sunday.

The soldier, assigned to the 56th Brigade Combat Team, was on nighttime patrol, military officials said in a statement.

The death brings the number of U.S. troops who have died in Iraq since March 2003 to 1,899. Fifteen U.S. service members have died in September.
