(CNN) -- Donna Watts-Brighthaupt wanted to give up fatty foods and quit smoking, or at least cut back a bit, during the "New You Resolution" program, quite a challenge for someone working for a lobbying firm, pursuing a masters degree and raising two kids. Her boss, Frank Purcell, joined her in her attempt to forge a healthier life. He's a lobbyist for the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. Watts-Brighthaupt signed up both of them for the New You program without telling Purcell. She broke the news after they were selected. A trainer told Watts-Brighthaupt to shoot for four or five days of cardio workouts each week and three days of strength training. She tried to quit smoking by easing her daily intake, not going cold turkey. "I'm going to try to stop smoking," she said. "I'm not promising anything, but to try to find ways to incorporate the smoking thing with the eating and exercise. For example, just take two cigarettes out of the pack and putting them aside for the day." Now, nine months after her journey began, Watts-Brighthaupt comes back for a check-up. Follow her progress on The Buddy Blog and on "American Morning," Monday through Friday, 6-10 a.m. ET. ![]() Donna Watts-Brighthaupt, left, works out with her trainer. SPECIAL REPORT
