(CNN) -- Moral issues sometimes drive voters to the polls not only to support or oppose a candidate, but also to make their voices heard on dozens of ballot measures dealing with issues like same-sex marriage, abortion or stem cell research.

We asked CNN.com readers to send in their thoughts on some of these moral issues and how these will affect their vote this November. (Share your comments.)

Here is a selection of responses, some of which have been edited:

I am sick and tired of the Christian Coalition (Reich) running the country. They are for no one but themselves and they do not care who they step on or hurt in the process. We need to get the preacher congressmen and women O-U-T of office and put people in with a brain. The rhetoric is absolutely disgusting, and I, for one, feel only people who support abortion/same-sex marriage and stem cell research should be in office! I also believe that when the Democrats take over this fall, it's time to impeach Bush on down to Rice for their lies and deceits.
Robert Blew; Seattle, Washington

The only moral issue that will affect my vote is the moral/immoral behavior of the candidate. Issues such as abortion, same-sex marriage and stem cell research are all matters of personal choice. The government should not try legislating their own standard of ethics within the confines of personal choice.
Karen Martin; Midway, Kentucky

My vote ... will go to a candidate who honors the sanctity of life over that of selfishness. My opinion is that whether man or woman, anyone who would abort life as a means of retroactive birth control (other than incest or rape) or kill an embryo in order to purportedly give life to another are not worthy of their own life. My vote will go to a conservative candidate -- which immediately excludes Democrats (on the left) or Republicans (playing it "safe" in the middle).
Shawn Milne; Tooele, Utah

I will vote Democratic and Libertarian this year because I support equal rights, including equal access to entering into a personal contract with another adult of sound mind and legal age for entering into a contract...also known as LBTG marriage rights ... I support abortion because I think the existing, established life of the woman overrides the potential life of the fetus ... I support stem cell research -- we have a steady supply of zygotes available through the in vitro fertilization industry ... I would support utilization of stem cells from aborted fetuses if they are useable. I support cloning for skin grafting and things like that. I support science and medical research although I do not support animal testing. I think there should be human trials (voluntary, paid) and there should be computer models used instead.
Janet Hitt; Sugar Land, Texas

The first litmus test for a candidate for me to support is whether or not they are "pro-choice." If so, I'll consider them and then look at where they stand on the other issues.
Lisa Mahon; Ripley, West Virginia

I look more to ethics and issues involving such things as dealing with porn, all kinds of abuse, and failure to respect the law. From the John Karrs to the FDLS and Warren Jeffs to human trafficking to the illegal use of drugs to "spinning" instead of telling the truth.
Linda Bleakley; Bella Vista, Arkansas
