(CNN) -- Its full name is the Digital Versatile Disc, and it certainly lives up to the billing.

In its 4.7 gigabytes (more for double capacity), the average DVD contains a movie or TV program (or several), subtitles, various languages, commentary tracks and a number of other bonus features. Given all that, it's no wonder a purchase is more than just adding a little entertainment to the shelf; with some DVDs, one never seems to get to the bottom.

This year's releases have come in clever packaging (a new edition of "Reservoir Dogs" in a faux gas can), with even more material than the last version (just three years after a "Complete James Bond" release, the whole series is out again, this time with Roger Moore commentaries and other bonuses) and as true ultimates (a remastered "Seven Samurai" that should be the last word for that Kurosawa classic).

The flood of DVDs also includes titles for children (a new SpongeBob SquarePants collection), nostalgic adults (new Dick Cavett and Johnny Carson boxes) and -- yes -- the whole family (the fine "BBC Atlas of the Natural World: Western Hemisphere and Antarctica").
