Counting down to the marathonBy CNN's Don Riddell LONDON, England (CNN) -- Anyone who's ever run a marathon will tell you that training is paramount. It is essential to get into a routine for a good 16 weeks prior to the event, building up your distance and stamina on a month by month basis. I've found that running for about an hour three times a week provides a good base, and you should aim to gradually increase that on weekends. I'm making it harder for myself this year as a heavy travel schedule for CNN means that I'll often be stuck on planes, in hotels and generally in unfamiliar locations. I'll therefore have to make the most of any down-time I get on the road, hitting the treadmills whenever possible and training for longer when I get the chance. Using the gym is actually good advice to anyone in training. It helps to break up the monotony of road-running with cycling and swimming, and it can be easier on your joints too. It's important to get the right equipment -- take professional advice on your trainers, and wear running socks to avoid blisters -- you can't afford to get any of those! However, don't change your shoes too close to race-day, they'll need to be properly broken in. Healthy eating is also important during this time; cutting down on alcohol will help, and you should introduce more carbohydrates, such as pasta, into your diet.
