Jones sets world record in trials

MELBOURNE, Australia -- Leisel Jones demolished her own world record for the women's 200 meters breaststroke at the Australian Commonwealth Games trials in Melbourne on Wednesday.

Jones recorded a time of two minutes 20.54 seconds, fully 1.18 seconds faster than her previous record set at the 2005 world championships in Montreal, Canada.

It is the third world record of the trials which are doubling as the Australian national long course championships.

Libby Lenton set a women's 100 meters freestyle world record of 53.42 seconds on Tuesday, wiping 0.10 seconds off the previous world record set by compatriot Jodie Henry at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Jade Edmistone lowered her 50m breaststroke world record to 30.31 seconds in Monday's heats.

Jones said her only regret was having broken her old record by such a margin, making it difficult to set a new world best time in the same pool when it hosts the swimming at next month's Commonwealth Games.

"I probably should have gone a bit slower so I could break it gradually, but you never know how in front of it you are so if I back off it a bit you might miss it by 0.01 seconds," she said.

Jones powered home in the final 50 meters to come from half a second off her Montreal record pace to set the new time.

"I knew my back end was a lot faster than in Montreal because I am a lot tougher swimmer now," she said.
