Eighth career title for happy Haas

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Germany's in-form Tommy Haas battled to a 6-3 3-6 7-6 victory over defending champion Xavier Malisse of Belgium in the Delray Beach International final on Sunday.

Haas won his eighth career title and improved his season record to 11-2, his only two losses coming to world No. 1 Roger Federer in the Doha semifinals and Australian Open fourth round.

The two hour, 11-minute match ended in the third set tie-break when Malisse broke a string hitting a forehand that sailed long.

Malisse fought off three break points in the second game of the opening set but was broken in the sixth game.

In the second set 27-year-old Haas was broken in the eighth game to force the deciding set.

The players exchanged breaks in the seventh and eighth games of the decider before heading into a tie-break, which Haas won 7-5.
