Russian skaters to all miss worlds
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTSMOSCOW, Russia -- None of Russia's Olympic medallists will compete at this month's world figure skating championships in the Canadian city of Calgary. Olympic pairs champions Tatiana Totmianina and Maxim Marinin as well as Tatiana Navka and Roman Kostomarov, who won the ice dancing gold medal in Torino, will not defend their world titles. Totmianina and Marinin have retired since their Olympic triumph, as has Navka. Olympic men's champion Yevgeny Plushenko and Irina Slutskaya, who won bronze in the women's competition, have yet to make up their minds whether to remain in the sport, they too will be absent in Calgary. "It has been a long season," said Valentin Piseyev, president of the Russian Figure Skating Federation. "Everyone was gearing toward the Olympics. It was our main focus and now all of our top skaters need some rest," he said. "We'll soon begin preparations for next season so don't count us out. I hope by next year Russia will be as strong as ever." The world championships will be held from March 20 to 26.
