Roberts fastest in Qatar practice

LONDON, England -- American Kenny Roberts Jr. was fastest in the first practice sessions for the Qatar Grand Prix on Thursday.

Roberts, on his KR211V, headed MotoGP classification with a time of one minute 56.905 seconds, beating Loris Capirossi's pole-setting time last year.

World champion Valentino Rossi (Yahama) was sixth fastest, behind fellow Italian Loris Capirossi who won the opening race in Jerez on his Ducati.

"It's been a long time for the team and for me but it feels good to be back at the top," said Roberts, eighth in the opening race.

"When you've got such a great engine and such great tyres then it comes easy to go fast."
