Voeckler edges to Basque stage win
![]() Voeckler got the better of Jens Voigt to take the fifth stage of the race. ZALLA, Spain -- Frenchman Thomas Voeckler edged out Germany's Jens Voigt in a duel for stage five of the Tour of the Basque Country from Vitoria to Zalla on Friday. Finishing third, 12 seconds behind, was Spaniard Juan Jose Cobo, the last man to be dropped by the leading pair from a 10-rider break. "I knew Jens was the man to watch, he's won stages here before," said Voeckler, who led the Tour de France for over a week in 2004. Spaniard Samuel Sanchez retains the overall lead in the race which ends on Saturday with a 24km time trial in Zalla. He is tied on time with compatriot Alberto Contador. Italian Davide Rebellin lies in third place, two seconds off the pace. Voeckler's win was Bouygues Telecom's second of the season, and ends a run of four successive stage victories in the Basque Country for host nation Spain. With 15 riders separated by less than a minute in the overall standings, the title will be up for grabs in the time trial.
